W. P. (William Paul) Sprayberry. Namesake of Sprayberry High School, Superintendant of Cobb County Schools, and President of the Georgia Education Association. Mr. Sprayberry died on September 5, 1971. This is his picture from the 1955 Echo.
His obituary: Mr. Sprayberry. William Paul Sprayberry, 71, superintendent of the Cobb County Schools from 1944 to 1966, died Sunday in Kennestone Hospital after a heart attack Thursday. His home was at 4364 Seminole Drive in Acworth. Funeral Services were scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Acworth United Methodist Church. The body was to be at the church at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Nat Long and the Rev. Nat Tribble were to officiate with burial in Kennesaw Memorial Park. The official board of the church will serve as honorary escorts. I lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Acworth Methodist Church. Mr. Sprayberry was a life–long resident of Cobb County and was educated in schools here. He attended Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. He was principal of Powder Springs and Acworth High Schools before becoming superintendent of education in 1944, serving during a critical expansion period for the county and its school system. Mr. Sprayberry retired as superintendent in 1960 and had worked since then as curriculum supervisor for the State Department of Education and director of field services for the Southeastern Education Laboratory. Very active in the Acworth United Methodist Church, he had been chairman of the building committee and the pastor parish relations committee. He was a close advisor to all pastors and had taught a men's Bible Sunday School class. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruth White Sprayberry; daughter, Mrs. Sue Sprayberry Butler of Smyrna; two sisters, Mrs. S.L. Laird Sr. of Atlanta and Mrs. C.A. Gustafson of Smyrna; brother, Hubert J. Sprayberry of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. C.B. Sprayberry of Rome and Mrs. B.I. Sprayberry of Hiram; nieces and nephews.
