Buried New Park Cemetery, Fort Gaines, Clay County, Georgia, USA. William Hoyle Leverett was born on a farm in Terrell County near Parrott, Georgia. After graduating from Dawson High School, he attended Norman College in Norman Park Georgia. He completed his last two years of college at Mercer College in Macon, Georgia. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Physics.
Following college, he got various positions in the education field, including Principal of Preston High School and Teacher and Coach in Acworth, Georgia. When World War II broke out, he got a job with the Army Signal Corps Labs at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey as a civil servant. He joined the U. S. Navy on November 29, 1943. Because of his background in Physics, he was selected for training in Radar and Sonar capabilities and spent time in Little Creek, Virginia and at Princeton University. On March 7, 1945, he married Eva Marjorie Sanders of Edison, Georgia. Later in 1945, he was in San Diego, California, receiving further training in Sonar and was preparing to be a part of the Naval component of the planned invasion of mainland Japan which never came due to the deployment of the atomic bombs. He was discharged from the Navy on October 11, 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, J.G. and returned to Edison, Georgia where he farmed until 1954. In 1954, Bill moved his family (now reinforced with 4 children) to Marietta, Georgia and began teaching at Sprayberry High School. Over the ensuing years, he spent time in the Cobb County School System in various positions, including teacher, coach, and principal. He transferred to McEachern School in 1956 where he taught science and math, coached the varsity and junior varsity girl's basketball teams and was the assistant principal , which meant he was in charge of the elementary school. In those days, McEachern was a twelve grade school on one campus. During this time he attended Auburn University on weekends and during summer months, earning his Masters Degree in education at the end of the summer quarter in 1960. At the beginning of the summer session in 1962 at the University of Georgia, he commenced on further graduate studies after being awarded a National Science Foundation Grant. He moved the family to Athens in the fall and received T-6 and P-6 certificates in August 1962. The family returned to Marietta at that time and Bill took a job as principal of Milford Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia. He continued his career in public education until he retired.
