His obituary: Eskridge, Tommy Gene. Born October 9, 1934, in Winston County, Miss., Tommy Gene Eskridge was the oldest of three children of Marvin Curtis and Doris Dean McCool Eskridge. Tommy grew up in Oktibbeha County, Miss., and at the age of 13 was baptized by the Rev. Prentiss M. Gordon, Sr., at Sturgis Methodist Church. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1952; later that same year he was inducted into the U.S. Navy. In 1954 he married Mary Joyce Polk. Following his discharge in 1955 from military service, Tommy attended Mississippi State University. In 1961 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial arts and afterward taught in Amory, Miss., and Cobb County, Ga. He took a hiatus from teaching in 1966 and pursued a career in retail business, initially in Starkville, Miss.; then in Birmingham, Ala. Tommy returned to public school education in 1981, teaching and coaching in the Plaquemines Parish (La.) school system. He retired in 1997. Mary and Tommy moved back to Birmingham, Ala. area in June 1998, settling in Mount Olive. Three sons and one daughter were born to Tommy and Mry Eskridge: David Wayne, Robert Edward, Robyn Jean, and Charles Alan. David is married to the former Pamela M. Blackwell, and they live with their children, David Allen and Megan Michelle in Mt. Olive, Ala. Robert makes his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Robyn Crawford Fuller is married to Vander Bill Fuller. The live in Nederland, Texas, with sons, Michael Thomas Crawford, John Mark Crawford, Michael Shane Fuller, and Jeremy Lee Fuller. Charles is married to the former Nancy Lou Brogle Hermanson. They also live in Birmingham, as do children, Heather Hermanson Shaw and Eric Jay Hermanson. Tommy's brother, Jerry, lives in Columbiana, Ala. Their parents, as well as their only sister, Betty Rebecca Eskridge, preceded Tommy in death. Tommy was a member of the Gardendale – Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 1999, at 11 a.m. from Gardendale–Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Rev. Prentiss M. Gordon, Sr. of Starkville, Miss., officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday at Ridout’s Roebuck East Chapel in Trussville. Burial will be in Forest Crest Cemetery. Ridout's Roebuck East Chapel is directing.
