Her obituary: Ruth Strother. Ruth Jackson Strother, 89, of Marietta, GA died August 19, 2009. She was born April 27, 1920, in Matthews, GA, the daughter of the late Cortez Augustus Jackson and the late Mary Edith Jones Jackson. She graduated from Gibson High School, received a teaching certificate from Georgia Teachers' College (now Georgia Southern University) in 1938 and began teaching elementary school that year. In 1950, she received a B.S. degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia and accepted a job as a Home Demonstration Agent for Cobb County. On July 13, 1951, she married John Reeves Strother in Marietta. For the next several years, she was a homemaker volunteering both in her church, Marietta First United Methodist Church, and in the community. She was a member of Morning Glory Garden Club for many years. In 1969, she returned to work as a librarian at Daniell Junior High School. She received her M. Ed. degree in Library Science from the University of Georgia in 1973. In 1981, she transferred to Sprayberry High School where she served as a librarian until her retirement in 1987. She was active throughout her life at First Methodist where she was the secretary of the original board that established the preschool, was the District Director for Children's Work, led Disciple Bible Study and was co-librarian with Mary Brownlow for the church's library. She and her husband were founding members of Wesleyan Fellowship and at the time of her death, they were members of Marietta Alliance Church. She also was a volunteer with WellStar Community Hospice for many years after her retirement. Her crowning achievement was being a loving, nurturing, Christ-like mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren, all of whom survive her: her daughter, Pamela Strother Downs of Marietta, GA, her husband, Thomas D. Downs and their children, Annie Downs of Nashville, TN, Tatum Downs of Honolulu, HI and Sally Downs of Marietta, GA and her son, John R. Strother, Jr. of Lagrange, GA, his wife, Julee Strother and their children, Jake Strother of Marietta, GA and Josh and Julianne Strother of Lagrange, GA. She is also survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, John R. Strother, Sr., who considered her to be a true Proverbs 31 woman. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Jackson Wheeler of Macon, GA and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her other siblings, Milford Jackson of Gainesville, GA, Edna Jackson Horne of Rochester, MN, and Arthur Jackson of Columbus, OH and by her niece, Joyce Jackson Rabb of Gainesville, GA. A Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel at Mayes Ward Funeral Home on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dr. David Hayes and Rev. Dr. Charles Sineath officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m. before the service. The private burial will be at Ways Baptist Church Cemetery in Stellaville, GA.
