Ms. Kittye, her smile and hug with a cheerful Hello Darling , is now in our memory. Frances Kittye Barton died Wednesday after a short bout of pancreatic cancer. She has donated her body to Research at Emory University as well as being a parts donor in Marietta, as her husband, Harry Barton, had done in 1980. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church where she has been a member more than 40 years. The service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Barton was well known as a high school teacher for 37 years, beginning in Savannah and then Marietta High before moving to the new 1952 Sprayberry High. There were hundreds of families that had four or five children all get their English training from Ms. Kittye, as she has been know for years. She took many groups of students to other countries on tours and class credits.
Ms. Kittye was also a big part of the 50's Marietta Theatre Guild with her husband, Harry, and was actress of the year for such roles as the sweet sister in Arsenic and Old Lace or the very formal mother in You Cant Take It With You.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, she was an honor student and won a scholarship to finish college in three years. She then taught English, Latin, Spanish and dramatics.
Kittye Barton was known in recent years for her programs for the Marietta Senior Citizens. She did resertations[recitations] about everything from Christmas to how we got the Easter Bunny. In past years you might have seen her at the Voting Polls in Cobb County where she worked many years.
Ms. Kittye has been a resident at Atherton Place in Marietta since she was hit in an auto accident that took her ability to drive in 1995. Her favorite pastime was visiting her daughter, K., in Washington, D.C., and being able to do a side trip to New York for the latest Broadway hits and attended many opening nights at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
She was special to thousands of students and in her own family, a mother of three, grandmother of four and great grandmother of six. K. Drew, former Carter Presidential Appointment, resides in the Washington area; Jan Barton, a retired school teacher, lives in Marietta; and son Teri Barton, a Massage Therapist, resides in Roswell.
Ms. Kittye’s lovely collection of angels and her many clowns will be part of her memorial service. The Barton family invite all who knew her to share in celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Kittye would want donations to go to the Cancer Society, the Alzheimers Society or the Arthritis Association for research. For family information, you may call 770-428-9215.
