His obituary: Coach Joseph Joe R. Dean, August 7, 1933 – May 2, 2013. Joseph Raymond Dean Sr, 79, passed peacefully at his home on May 2 after a courageous battle with ALS. Joe was born in Garden City, Alabama on August 7, 1933 to Verna Golden Dean and Raymond Oliver Dean. He lettered in football and baseball at Howard College (1955). He also earned a Masters in Education (Alabama) and Specialist in Education degree (UGA). Joe coached high school football in Alabama for 13 years and at Sprayberry High School from 1969 to 1972. Afterward, he was assistant principal at Sprayberry and Walton, and principal at Osborne Middle. Joe enjoyed the fellowship of friends from the East Cobb Golf Club. His greatest passions were his faith, his family, and sports. He was a wonderful husband and father, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by Ella, his loving wife of 55 years, son Joe Jr (Teresa), son David, son Tom (Sherilyn), and grandchildren Joey (Margaret), Emily, Laura, William, Steven (Sherri), and Carly. Joe was a member of Mount Paran North, Church of God. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 14 at 3:00 P.M. in the Watkins Chapel at Mount Paran North. Memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation.
