Her obituary: Sergent – Dorothy Wand Sergent, 86 of Marietta, died Saturday, July 8, 2000. Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at The Carmichael Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta with the Reverand Karen Evans officiating. Burial will be at Kennesaw Memorial Cemetery in Marietta. Ms. Sergent was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Born in Woodbury, Kentucky, October 4, 1913, Ms. Sergent graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1930. She graduated from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky., with an AB degree in 1933 and from Bowling Green College of Commerce with a BA in 1934. Ms. Sergent began teaching high school in West Virginia from 1934 to 1941, and at the College of Commerce in 1941 to 1942 in Bowling Green, Ky. Before marrying and moving to Georgia in 1951, she also taught in Kingsport, Tenn., at Kingsport High School and Dobyns-Bennett High School. Ms. Sergent taught as a Cobb County teacher at Sprayberry High School from 1955-1957 before teaching in the Marietta school system at Marietta High School, where she taught from 1957 to 1961. She taught at Pine Forest Elementary School from 1961 to 1964 and at Park Street Elementary School from 1964 to 1965. In 1965, Ms. Sergent went back to teaching in the Cobb County school system at J.J. Daniell Junior High School and was one of the original teachers to open the new school, now a middle school. She retired from J.J. Daniell in 1979. Ms. Sergent was a member of the Pi Beta Kappa Sorority at the Bowling Green Business College, the Eastern Star, Park City Chapter in Bowling Green, Ky.; Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority for Teachers; Cobb County Teachers Association; and the National Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Sergent is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Gene Parson; one granddaughter and her husband, Brandy and David Reynolds; a sister, Ms. Josephine King of Madison, Ala.; a step-sister, Mrs. Maxine Massey of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews. Placed by family.
