Archibald DeWitte Compton, age 92, of Lithonia, died peacefully July 15, 2006 at the Heartland Hospice in Conyers. Mr. Compton was the son of the late W.D. Compton and Archye Speir Compton and was born on the Speir family farm near Wadley, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Frances Purvis Compton and Frances Gober Compton. He is survived by his son, Bill Compton, his daughter, Kaye Compton; two grandchildren: Rebecca Compton and Marie Feeny; two great-grandchildren; Caleb and Ella Feeny and by his step children, Dr. Bill Allen, Jane Irminger and Mary Charles Clere. Mr. Compton was a graduate of the University of Georgia whose career of nearly 50 years as an educator including coaching, classroom teaching and administration. He retired from the Math Dept. at Heritage High School in Conyers in 1984 and was a valued substitute teacher there for an additional number of years. He was a long time member of the Lithonia First United Methodist Church where he seved in many capacities including Sunday school teacher for the Crusaders Class and President of the United Methodist Men. He was also a leader of the Sparklers senior citizens organization for many years. He was, indeed, a Sparkler and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A funeral will be held 1 o'clock, Thursday, July 20, at Lithonia First United Methodist Church with Rev. Renea Slater and Dr. Lawrence Wilson officiating. The interment service will be 3 o'clock at Jackson City Cemetery in Jackson, GA. Donations may be made in memory of DeWitte Compton to Metro Atlanta Recovery Residences (MARR, Inc.) or Lithonia First UMC. The family will receive friends 5-7 Wesnesday evening and 10-11:30 Thursday morning at Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia.
