December 2, 1937 - January 3, 2024 – Carol Ann Bates Borggaard peacefully passed away on January 3, 2024 with her loving husband of 63 years, Richard, by her side. Carol Ann was born December 2, 1937 in Worcester, MA to Frederick and Miriam Bates. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst with a BS in Bacteriology. She married Richard A. Borggaard, her college sweetheart on June 26, 1959. They lived throughout the Boston area and upstate New York before moving to Georgia. As her family got older, Carol Ann worked as a paraprofessional in the Malone Central School District. Later, when Carol Ann and her husband moved to Woodstock, GA she resumed her role as a guidance department paraprofessional in several schools including Sprayberry High School and Simpson Middle School.
Carol Ann was a dance enthusiast. She took lessons throughout her life and taught tap dancing until the age of 76, always gleefully performing with her students. Tap dancing was her passion with her proudest memories of dancing with Tommy Tune and Gregory Hines. Carol Ann’s favorite place in the world was Rockport, MA where she spent many summers on Back Beach and Long Beach savoring every moment in the New England atmosphere. Carol Ann was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of the USA and active as a scout and later as a troop leader and council board member of North Country Girl Scout Council. She strongly believed in and supported the training and skills Girl Scouting provides for young women. Her volunteer work in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA fostered a significant pin collection and Olympic memories she shared with all. Carol Ann had many hobbies. She loved to make jewelry, knit and crochet as well as sew and cross stitch. She was also a voracious reader of all genres which made her a Trivia champ. You could often find her reading a book on the back porch of her home or in a chair at the beach. Being with family and friends was the highlight of her days no matter where they gathered. Carol Ann is survived by her husband, Richard, daughters Cathlyn Babb (Rob), Marcia Burkett (Brad) and her son Andrew Borggaard (Jenn) along with 8 grandchildren: Megan, Gillian (Robert), Ryan (Chloe), Brady, Kate, Emma, Abi, and Sam. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth Bates (Debbie) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours and a funeral service will be held at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Drive, Woodstock, GA 30188 on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Calling hours are from 10-11:30 am with a service immediately following. The family will also hold a memorial celebration of life in the Boston area in the spring. In lieu of flowers and in recognition of Carol Ann’s passion for the performing arts, the family asks you to consider attending a dance performance in her memory.
