Sandy Jones. Sandy died on October 16, 2000.
Her obituary: Sandy Popham, 36, remembered as 'gutsy graphic designer' who loved life. When Sandy Popham worked at the Mindpower Inc. marketing firm in Atlanta as a graphic designer, all the employees of the company had lighthearted biographies written about them. Mrs. Popham's hit close to her personality. The gutsy graphic designer was described as the quietest Mindpower staff member, but also the most courageous. Sandy Jones Popham, 36, of Marietta died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, after a five-year battle with breast cancer. A 1982 graduate of Sprayberry High School, she attended the Atlanta Portfolio Center, where she trained to become a graphic designer. She was great, a very talented designer, said Donna Bowling, co-owner of Mindpower. She worked full-time for us before she got sick. I can honestly say she was probably, bar none, the nicest person you'd ever meet. According to Ms. Bowler, she was a fine worker, as well. She was a talented designer, she said. All the clients loved her. Printers she worked with years ago still call me to see how she is doing. Some of Ms. Popham's clients included Clayton State College, Children's Hospital of Oakland and Northeastern University. More important than her career was her family, Ms. Bowling said. She was a real sweet person, her husband, Don, said. She was involved with Girl Scouts as a troop leader, encouraging her daughters Megan, 9, and Samantha, 6, to participate. Her family came first, Ms. Bowling said. In addition to leading scouts, Ms. Popham spent a year as a room mother at Oak Grove Elementary School. She was able to put her art skills to the test there, Don Popham said. She taught art classes at the school because there were not enough art teachers, he said. She probably taught classes every month or so to expose the children to art. She did her best not to let her illness get to her. She was just so inspirational, Popham said. She loved life. She was the sweetest person you'd ever meet. Popham said she was a fighter who didn't mind taking chances. She loved to experiment with new ideas, and she wasn't afraid to go the extra mile to find the cure, he said. She was not afraid to try experimental treatments to try and get healthy. Earlier this month, the Pophams attended a cancer survivors' celebration at Zoo Atlanta. The zoo was one of her favorite places, Popham said. She also loved art museums.
She was able to battle cancer so long because of her belief in God, Ms. Bowling said. She had strong faith, she said. I couldn't have fought cancer as long as she did. She had unexpected and uncommon strength. She combined her commitment to her faith with her talent as a graphic designer, producing brochures and other projects for Mt. Paran North Church of God, where she was a member. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Paran North Church of God with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include, her husband, Don Popham; two daughters, Megan Popham and Samantha Popham; her parents, Bill and Inez Jones; and one brother, David Jones, all of Marietta;and nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made to the Marietta Project Outreach, c/o Mt. Paran North Church of God, 1700 Allgood Road, Marietta, Ga. 30062. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home. [Marietta Daily Journal (GA) – Tuesday, October 17, 2000]
