His obituary: Tony Day Johnson, October 1, 1962 – August 18, 2009. (Note: Listed as Tony Curtis Johnson in the 1980 Echo). It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a dear son, brother, friend, neighbor and devoted husband, Tony Day Johnson. Tony died on August 18, 2009 at Stanford Hospital and Clinics in California from complications following brain surgery. Tony worked as a Management and Program Analyst in the Office of the Director, National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases (NCPDCID) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). He was extremely proud of the work he did with the CDC and the work the CDC does for others. Before working with the CDC, Tony held positions as a public affairs specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve Command, the U.S. Army 2nd Recruiting Brigade, and the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion, and as a communications specialist with the American Red Cross. He earned a B.A. degree in speech and theater from Newberry College and completed several Department of Defense graduate courses in communications. Tony was an avid runner, practiced yoga on nearly a daily basis, and was active in his neighborhood association as well as the broader Atlanta community. He enjoyed live theatre, art, and music, as well as taking long walks with his two pet boxers Sou and Frank. He was born at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, and grew up in Marietta, GA. He attended Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA and was one of the few citizens of Atlanta that was born and raised here, a fact he was quite proud of. He was living in Stone Mountain GA at the time of his death. Tony is survived by his beloved husband William; his sister, Janet Woodruff; and his mother Janie Johnson.
