Greg Garner. Greg died in August, 2020.
His obituary: Greg Garner, September 6, 1957 – August 29, 2020. Gregory (Greg) Parks Garner was born September 6, 1957 in Marietta, GA. His proud parents were Boyd and Sara Garner, who loved their son dearly. Greg grew up on Greers Chapel Road in Marietta and attended Elizabeth Elementary School, J.J. Daniell Junior High and Sprayberry High School, where he graduated in 1975. Greg was an outstanding athlete, growing up playing football, basketball and baseball. But it was baseball that was his true standout sport, where he was a dominant pitcher at all levels, from youth through high school. He once pitched a perfect game in Custer Park Bronco League play, hit back to back home runs in his first Pony League game and was a two-time Atlanta Dugout Club player of the week while pitching for Sprayberry High School. He was also named to the Atlanta Dugout Club's Metro-Atlanta All-Star Team in 1975. That same year, he was recognized as Sprayberry baseball's player of the year. Greg was also named as one of Sprayberry's top-50 all-time baseball players years after he graduated. After high school, Greg pitched for Middle Georgia College for two years and attained an associate degree in arts. He then transferred to the University of Georgia, where he pitched for one season. Greg eventually went to work for Rollins Truck Leasing, where he was recognized as one of the company's top salesmen. He remained in the trucking and mobile unit rentals industries, where he consistently was named with the company's top performers. More than anything, Greg was loved by his parents and all his friends. His mother and father always showed pride in Greg's achievements, especially baseball, and were extremely proud that Greg did not miss a day of school or been tardy from fourth through seventh grades. They loved him in every way. To his friends, Greg was always a person who could create laughter and bring joy to a moment. He had an intelligent way of finding humor in the everyday happenings of life and people's common habits and personalities. At the same time, he did so without causing hurt to others. Greg knew no boundaries in life, which could be a blessing and a curse for him. His love and pride for his parents were evident. His mother died when Greg was in his twenties, and his father passed away in 2010. While friends were always considered family by Greg, an only child, that became more so after he lost his dad. He enjoyed talking about all the people he had known and the joyful times he had spent with them. It usually involved laughing. While his pitching abilities will never be forgotten, they pale in comparison to the great stories his actions and mind created for others in his lifetime and the joy he brought to so many people. Greg left this life in August of 2020. A night to celebrate his life will take place October 5, 2021, at Marietta Funeral Home on Piedmont Road in Marietta. It begins at 7:30 pm, and people can begin arriving by 7:00 pm. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mariettafuneralhome.org. Good people deserve to be remembered. Always remember Greg Garner,,,, and smile. [Marietta Funeral Home, Marietta, Ga.]
