His obituary: Col. (Ret.) James E. (Jim) Handley, May 11, 2009. Georgia--Col. (Ret) James E. (Jim) Handley, age 54, died on Monday May 11, 2009. The Tifton, Ga., native was commissioned as an Armor Officer from North Georgia College and State University in June 1978. He went on to a distinguished career serving fifteen years on active duty and an additional fifteen years in the U.S. Army Reserve. Colonel Handley led soldiers for over three decades, serving in positions of leadership from the Platoon to the Brigade level. For the past 11 years, he worked with Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs at the collegiate level mentoring and developing young men and women for service as U.S. Army Officers. Colonel Handley was the Assistant Professor of Military Science at Armstrong State University from 2000-2006. For the past three years, he served as the Eagle Battalion Executive Officer and freshman instructor at Georgia Southern University. Colonel Handley was known to Cadets and fellow Cadre members as a true professional and a gifted instructor and mentor. He had a profound, positive impact on hundreds of currently serving Army Officers. Colonel Handley's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Oversees Service Ribbon, and the Parachutist Badge. He is preceded in death by his brother, David Handley. He was a member of the AOPA, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters Katherine Anne Handley, of Exton, Pa., and Elizabeth Jane Handley, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his parents, Edward A. and Mildred G. Handley, of Cleveland, Ga.; one sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Stephen Swafford, of Easley, S.C.; one niece one nephew; his aunt, June Handley, of Griffin, Ga.; his uncle, Richard Gaston, of Griffin, Ga.; a friend, Melanie Higgins, of Statesboro. The memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Friends may sign the online register book at www.joineranderson.com.
