His obituary: Richard Alan Mitchem, September 25, 1953 – April 4, 2014. Richard Alan Mitchem, actor, teacher, partner and friend, died peacefully in his home on Friday, April 4, 2014 surrounded by his partner in life, David Mobley, and his closest friend, Melanie Upshaw. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Wynette Mitchem, and his sister, Ann Tant. He is survived by David Mobley along with many extended family members and friends including his students who were greatly influenced by Mitchem as many of them called him. Richard received his BA degree in Drama from West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia where he was active in the Baptist Student Union; and his Master's Degree in Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Theatre was his passion and he acted in, and directed numerous productions in his 40+ year career, both professionally and in local theatres. Richard was an educator in the Georgia public school system for over 30 years having taught high school Drama and English in Effingham County, Warner Robins, and Gwinnett County. He retired in December of 2012. His legacy is in his strong, positive influence on the lives of many students now successful in the theatre and other artistic fields along with those who chose other paths outside the theatre. All friends and family are welcome to gather on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Roswell Funeral Home. A service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Roswell Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will follow at Roswell Cemetery.
