FAYETTEVILLE - Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas M. Shumaker, a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 74 years of age. He was born June 22, 1935, in Hollywood, Calif., to the late Maynard and Harriet Shumaker. Mr. Shumaker served in the U.S. Army for 32 1/2years. In addition to numerous other assignments, he served two tours in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. He retired as command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, Sgt. 1st Class Mike Shumaker and wife Marie of Fort Bragg, and Jim Shumaker and wife Janean of Atlanta; three daughters, Angel Azar of Huntsville, Ala., Becky Jonason and husband Scott of Camas, Wash., and Donna Shumaker of Fayetteville; and 16 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. A visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m., with the service starting at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street with full military honors. Services entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
